In Celebration of Earth Day

How the SAG Awards is a Green Production

Today is Earth Day! The SAG Awards is dedicated to environmental protection and has put countless effort into maintaining a green production. In 2014 the SAG Awards was honored for the sixth consecutive year with the Environmental Media Association (EMA) Green Seal and in 2013 the SAG Awards won the EMA’s Green Production Award. In honor of Earth Day, here are some ways in which the SAG Awards has taken part in environmentally friendly practices.

  • Since the 19th SAG Awards the submission process of actors and projects for nomination consideration is completely paper free and 100% online.
  • The SAG Awards limits production printing and uses double-sided printing wherever possible.
  • In 2013 through the Reforestation & Biodiversity Project, Patagonia Sur, on behalf of the SAG Awards, planted 3,400 trees of forty-five native species on degraded lands in Patagonia, Chile to help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Patagonia Sur planted two for each of the 1,700 guests who attended the post SAG Awards Gala hosted by People magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation. It has been named the SAG Awards Forest.
  • Saunders Electric, Altergy, Multiquip, and DOE/Sandia National Labs brought clean, hydrogen fuel cell mobile lights funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to the SAG Awards.
  • Since 2009 the SAG Awards has incorporated into their production a comprehensive recycling and composting program, a local and organic menu, a no-idling zone around the Shrine Auditorium, and an online digital paper free press kit.
  • The SAG Awards’ dedication to reducing the Awards’ environmental footprint has allowed them to accomplish a nearly zero-waste event.

#EarthDay is not only a once a year celebration, but an ongoing event. It is important for everyone to earn their own green seal of approval by doing their part to help the environment not just today, but every day of the year.
